How to Choose the Right Cutting Width for Your Terrain

Selecting the correct cutting width for your remote-controlled mower is crucial for balancing productivity and maneuverability. Cutting width refers to the swath of grass or vegetation the mower can cut in a single pass, typically ranging from 300mm to 1200mm on commercial models. The right choice depends on three primary factors: terrain type, vegetation density, and available storage or transport space.

For open, flat areas such as golf course fairways, sports fields, or large pastures, wider cutting widths (800mm to 1200mm) maximize efficiency and reduce mowing time. A wider deck covers more ground per pass, which is especially valuable when maintaining dozens of acres regularly. However, wide decks can be cumbersome in tight spaces, around trees, or on narrow embankments.

For uneven terrain, slopes, or areas with obstacles like rocks, trees, or fence lines, a narrower cutting width (400mm to 600mm) offers better maneuverability and reduces the risk of blade strikes. Tracked mowers with narrower decks are particularly effective on steep slopes, where a wide deck could cause instability. As a general rule, choose the widest deck your terrain allows, but prioritize control and safety over maximum cutting width when operating in confined or hazardous conditions.
